Sealed Deck is Decipher's basic sealed-play tournament format for Star Wars CCG: players open unopened product at the event, trade away the cards of the other side, and build a 40-card deck. Decipher published it in 1996 as a non-sanctioned format and sanctioned it by 1998.[1][2]

  • Type: sealed deck
  • Defined by: Decipher (1996); Players Committee (2015, as Premiere Sealed)
  • Card pool: one unopened Premiere starter deck per player; later any starter deck plus the packs the director names; 40-card decks
  • In use: 1996 – 2002; listed in 2015
  • Also called: Sealed Deck Tournaments (1996);[1] the Decipher Sealed Deck Tournament Format (1999);[3] the Sealed Deck tournament (2000);[4] Premiere Sealed (Players Committee)[5]
  • GEMP: none. Sealed is a GEMP sealed-league format with its own product.

Card pool

1996–1999: one Premiere starter

In 1996: "By simply bringing one sealed starter deck to a tournament everyone will be playing with the 'fate' of the cards." Players are assigned Rebel or Imperial for the whole event; paired opponents open their decks and exchange all their cards of the other side, face down ("Yep, even those Vaders and Lukes!!!"); each player then has about 30 minutes to build a 40-card deck. No other cards may be brought in or traded, but players may swap with their unused cards between games. After the games the top Imperial and top Rebel play a final game, and players keep the cards they traded for.[1]

The 1999 guide specified "unopened Premiere starter decks (limited or unlimited)": a 40-card deck "from the 60 cards they have", a minimum of three games plus a final confrontation between the highest-scoring Rebel and Imperial players, and deck adjustment one for one from the "20 unused sealed deck cards". It also allowed theme sealed decks: "Tournament directors may run 'theme' sealed deck tournaments (Hoth, Dagobah etc.) by providing additional expansion packs for each player. ... In these cases, deck size can be increased up to, but no more than, 60 cards. These sealed deck events will still be sanctioned and rated."[3]

2000–2002: starter decks and packs

From the 2000 guide the format covered all of Decipher's games: "A sealed deck tournament is played with unopened starter decks", and each player must "bring, purchase, or be provided with any deck-building materials required for the tournament, such as expansion packs, Warp or Jedi Packs." For Star Wars CCG the deck is 40 cards, games are 60 minutes, players keep one side throughout, and the event has at least three games and a final confrontation between the top Dark and top Light player.[4][6] The 2002 guide's section "The Sealed Deck tournament" gives about 30 minutes to build the 40-card deck.[7]

Players Committee: Premiere Sealed

The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) lists Premiere Sealed first among its sealed deck formats: each player needs one Premiere starter deck, and the format uses the guide's general sealed rules:[5]

  • Product stays unopened until each player is paired with a first opponent and assigned a side of the Force, which the player keeps for the whole tournament.
  • Both players open everything at the same time. The Dark Side player gives all Light Side cards to the opponent and the Light Side player gives all Dark Side cards, face down, without either player seeing them. Each player keeps the cards received after the tournament.
  • If a player has no opponent to swap with, the Tournament Director swaps with that player from an extra sealed deck.
  • Deck building time is 10 minutes for 40-card decks and 20 minutes for 60-card decks.
  • No cards may be added from outside the tournament or by trading, but a player may re-customize the deck between games from the original stock of sealed cards.

The guide does not give a deck size for this format. Sealed deck games are timed at one minute per card in the deck (40 minutes for 40-card decks). A tournament has at least three games, then a Final Confrontation between the top Light Side and top Dark Side players, timed at 1.5 times the normal game length.[5]

History

In 1996 Decipher's guide listed "Sealed Deck Tournaments (Non-Sanctioned)" beside the sanctioned Swiss constructed system: "Decipher has put thought into this type of tournament and have play tested it for problems."[1] Its non-sanctioned page that year said "Decipher has devised tournament rules for sealed-deck, elimination, and simple-swiss events. While we are not currently sanctioning these types of tournaments, we do want to encourage them."[8]

By July 1998 "Three Tournament formats are sanctioned: Swiss, Junior Swiss, and Sealed Deck", with a separate Sealed Deck Command Card.[2] The Official Tournament Sealed Deck (1998) added the Enhanced Format Sealed Deck.[9] The 1999 guide kept a separate rating for each of the three formats: "Playing in one type of tournament has no effect on a players ratings for the other two types."[3] A new tournament director had to "run a Sealed Deck tournament before becoming permanent."[10]

Later Decipher sealed formats were built on these rules: First Anthology Sealed, EPP Overdrive, OTSD Booster Draft, Endor Draft ("the tournament reverts to the standard Decipher sealed deck format"),[11] the Death Star II Booster Draft and Death Star II Sealed-Deck Starter Format, and Jabba's Palace Sealed Deck. In 2001 Decipher's new Sprint ratings covered constructed play only: "there will not be a Sprint Rating for the Sealed Deck category."[12]

The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide keeps the format as "Premiere Sealed" (one Premiere Starter Deck, sealed rules), lists it first among its sealed deck formats, and sets sealed game time at one minute per card in the deck.[5] No event under the Players Committee rules is recorded on this wiki.
