OTSD Booster Draft
OTSD Booster Draft is a booster draft format played with the Official Tournament Sealed Deck (OTSD): players draft the Premiere and A New Hope boosters from the box and keep their own 18 premium cards. Decipher published it as the "Star Wars CCG sanctioned OTSD Booster Draft" by 1999, and the Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) keeps it under the same name.[1][2]
- Type: booster draft
- Defined by: Decipher (by 1999); Players Committee (2015)
- Card pool: one Official Tournament Sealed Deck per player (4 Premiere boosters, 1 A New Hope booster, 18 premium cards); the boosters are drafted, the premium cards are not; 40-card decks
- In use: 1999 – listed in 2015
- Also called: OTSD Booster Draft Format (Decipher, 2001)[3]
- GEMP: none
Card pool
- Product: "Each player must start with 1 Official Tournament Sealed Deck."
- Seating: groups of 6 where possible, otherwise 4; the tournament director drafts a dummy hand to keep Light and Dark equal ("The tournament director should always draft in a group of 6 and draft competitively"). Sides are assigned at random and seated alternately (L-D-L-D-L-D), never next to a player of the same side.
- Drafting: starting with the Premiere boosters, each player opens a pack, takes one card for their own side and passes the rest left. "There is no defensive drafting - you may only take cards from your Side of the Force." No one picks up the next stack until everyone has picked; picked cards may not be looked at again. Directions switch after each pack. The A New Hope pack is drafted last ("Drafting should be done in the same order in which the expansions were released").
- Premiums: "The eighteen premium cards that are in the Official Tournament Sealed Deck are not drafted. Each player holds onto their own and may incorporate them into their deck."
- Deck building: 10 minutes to build a 40-card deck; unused cards may be swapped in between games, keeping 40 cards. "The tournament is then run using the regular Enhanced Format Sealed Deck tournament rules."
The rules gave a table of group sizes (8 players: 2 groups of 4; 9: a group of 4 and a group of 6 with a dummy player; 10: 4 + 6; 11: 2 groups of 6, one with a dummy; 12: 2 groups of 6; and so on).[1]
The Players Committee guide gives the same procedure under its general Booster Draft rules: "The 18-card premium packs are opened as if the format were sealed, and only the booster packs are drafted."[2] Its group-size table differs from Decipher's for 12 players: Decipher put them in 2 groups of 6, the guide in 3 groups of 4.[1][2]
History
The rules page was on Decipher's site by September 1999 and was republished unchanged on Decipher's 2001–2002 tournament site.[1][4] At DecipherCon 1999 the Star Trek CCG schedule held an OTSD Booster Draft (ST.23) on 13 and 14 November.[5][6] Decipher's Star Wars tournament resources page of August 2002 still listed "OTSD Booster Draft Format" among its format notes, next to EPP Overdrive, Jabba's Palace Sealed Deck, Reflections II booster draft and the two closed environments.[7]
The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide keeps "OTSD Booster Draft" (one Official Tournament Sealed Deck; booster-draft rules) and adds a Jabba's Palace version, JPOTSD Booster Draft.[2]
