Death Star II Booster Draft

Death Star II Booster Draft is a booster draft format in which each player drafts from 3 Endor and 3 Death Star II boosters. Decipher introduced it in 2000 as one of three sanctioned "Endor/Death Star II" formats, which it soon renamed the Death Star II Closed Environment; the Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) keeps it under the same name.[1][2][3]

  • Type: booster draft
  • Defined by: Decipher (2000); Players Committee (2015)
  • Card pool: 3 Endor and 3 Death Star II booster packs per player; 40-card decks (Decipher)
  • In use: 2000 – 2002; listed in 2015
  • Also called: Endor/Death Star II Booster Draft Format (Decipher, first name);[4] Death Star II Closed Environment Booster Draft (DecipherCon 2000);[5] Death Star II Sealed Booster Draft (DecipherCon 2000 schedule);[6] Death Star II/Endor Draft (DecipherCon 2002 schedule)[7]
  • GEMP: none. GEMP's Premiere - Death Star II Draft and Endor - Death Star II Sealed are separate formats with different pools.

Decipher's rules:[8]

  • Decks: 40-card Light Side or Dark Side booster-drafted decks.
  • Product: "Each player receives 3 booster packs of Endor and 3 booster packs of Death Star II. (This is the recommended format and for playability reasons should not be reduced or increased)."
  • Seating: draft groups of 4; two excess players make one group of 6, and the tournament director drafts (or finds a stand-in) for an odd player. The director assigns one player's side at random and alternates sides around the table so that no two players of the same side sit together.
  • Drafting: every player opens one pack of the same expansion, has 30 seconds to take one card of their own side, and passes the rest clockwise; the next pack passes counter-clockwise, and so on. A player must take a card when one of their side is available; there is no counter-drafting; a player may not look at their picks until all packs are drafted.
  • Deck building: 20 minutes to build a 40-card deck from the drafted cards.
  • Event: a 2-round (4-game) or 3-round (6-game) Swiss event with 45-minute games; a final confrontation between the top Light Side and top Dark Side player is optional but must be declared at the start.

Results counted toward the player's Sealed Deck rating and were entered with the Sealed Deck option of Decipher's tournament software.[8]

Players Committee (2015)

Each player needs three Endor and three Death Star II booster packs. The format uses the guide's Booster Draft rules: players sit in groups of 4 or 6 with Light and Dark alternating, draft one card of their own side from each pack, and open packs in order of release (Endor before Death Star II).[3] Deck building time is 10 minutes for 40-card decks and 20 minutes for 60-card decks; the guide does not give a deck size for this format.[3]

History

Decipher launched the three formats (Death Star II Constructed, Death Star II Booster Draft, and the Death Star II Sealed-Deck Starter Format) as "Endor/Death Star II" tournament formats.[1][4] It then renamed them: "The season's biggest Star Wars CCG tournament series began with another name. In order to place the focus where it belongs - on the dynamic new Death Star II cards - the formats are renamed 'Death Star II Closed Environment.' Nothing else is changes [sic]."[2]

At DecipherCon 2000 Decipher scheduled the booster draft three times: Thursday 5 October at 1 p.m. (#SW212), Friday 6 October at 2 p.m. (#SW222) and Saturday 7 October at 4 p.m. (#SW233), four games each, entry $15, sanctioned. "Using only 3 Endor and 3 Death Star II boosters to draft from, do you think that you will defeat all of your opponents to win one of these tournaments?"[5][6]

From January 2001 Decipher kept a separate Closed Environment rating with constructed and sealed categories.[9] Its 2001 tournament resources still listed the Death Star II Closed Environment.[10] When the Episode I Closed Environment rating replaced it, Decipher archived the Endor/Death Star II Closed Environment rankings.[11]

The DecipherCon 2002 schedule listed a "Death Star II/Endor Draft" sealed event of 4 games on 1 November 2002 (SW204, $10); whether it used the same pack mix is not stated.[7]

The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide keeps the format as "Death Star II Booster Draft" with the same product, 3 Endor and 3 Death Star II booster packs, under its general booster-draft rules. After its list of sealed formats the guide reprints Decipher's 1999 Endor Draft rules.[3]

The earlier Endor Draft (1999) drafted 6 Endor packs into a 40-card deck.[12][13]
