Episode I Closed Environment
Episode I Closed Environment is a constructed format in which both decks use only cards with the Episode I icon. Decipher introduced it with the Coruscant expansion in August 2001 as a "stand-alone Episode I only environment designed especially for exciting constructed play".[1] Players also called it Type II or EP1.[2][3]
Card pool
After Decipher's January 2002 errata, 434 cards in four expansions carry the Episode I icon:[4]
| Expansion | Cards with the icon |
|---|---|
| Tatooine | 69 |
| Coruscant | 175 |
| Reflections III | 61 (62 as printed; Desperate Times lost the icon) |
| Theed Palace | 129 (the whole set) |
Both Reflections III Starting Effects carry the icon. Under a Starting Effect, only Defensive Shields with the icon may be placed.[5] In January 2002 Decipher struck the icon from Desperate Times, so it is not legal in this format.[6]
The Players Committee Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) also allows Virtual cards with the icon, Legacy or Standard depending on the event.[7]
Undercover spies
In this format only, an opponent's Undercover spy does not stop a Force drain from being initiated; the spy cancels the drain once it starts.[7] For example, with Keder The Black undercover at Tatooine: Watto's Junkyard and Credits Will Do Fine on table, the Light Side player may still initiate a drain there. The Dark Side player places a card on Credits Will Do Fine, then the drain is canceled.[7] Players used this rule by September 2001.[8]
Organized play
Decipher offered exclusive foil cards as prizes and asked players to have their local Tournament Director run Episode I only environment tournaments.[5] Its 2002 tournament resources page carried format notes for the "Episode I closed environment".[9] DecipherCon 2002 ran an "Episode I ONLY constructed" event on 31 October 2002.[10]
