EPP Overdrive
EPP Overdrive is a fast sealed deck format: each player opens one Enhanced Premiere pack (EPP), builds a 30-card deck and plays 15-minute games. Decipher introduced it in 1999 as "the newest sanctioned Sealed Deck tournament format", and the Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) keeps it.[1][2]
- Type: sealed deck
- Defined by: Decipher (1999); Players Committee (2015)
- Card pool: one Enhanced Premiere pack per player; 30-card decks
- In use: 1999 – listed in 2015
- Also called: EPP Overdrive Sealed Deck Format (Decipher, 2001–2002)[3]
- GEMP: none
Card pool
- Product: "each player starts with one Enhanced Premiere Pack. It is highly recommended that the players use Vader with Lightsaber EPP to build Dark Side decks and Luke with Lightsaber EPP to build Light Side decks", though any pack of the right side works. Directors provide equal numbers of Dark and Light packs.[1] The recommended packs contain Darth Vader With Lightsaber and Luke With Lightsaber.
- Pairing: the field is split into equal groups of Dark and Light players. With an odd number, one player of the larger side gets a bye in the first game; later byes go to the lowest-rated player of that side who has not had one.[3] Byes score 2 victory points and 0 differential.[1]
- Deck building: 15 minutes, strictly timed. Opponents of opposite sides open their packs and give each other, face down, the cards of the other side; each player then builds "their own deck of 30 cards". Between games a player may tweak the deck only with cards left over from their own pack; no trading.[1][3]
- Games: a 15-minute limit, strictly enforced. A game that runs over is scored as a modified win: 1 victory point plus the winner's Life Force as differential; the loser scores 0 victory points minus that differential.[1][3]
- Event: the standard minimum for sanctioned sealed deck of 3 games, but "it is preferable to run between 4 and 6 games."[1][3]
The Players Committee guide runs EPP Overdrive under its general sealed rules with the same product, recommended packs, 30-card decks, 15-minute games and 15-minute deck building, and asks for a minimum of 4 games.[2]
History
Decipher pitched EPP Overdrive as "a fast-moving alternative to the typical four-hour event".[1] Its EPP Overdrive page, with links for directors to post events and players to find them, was online by October 1999.[1] At DecipherCon 1999 the Star Wars schedule held EPP Overdrive (SW.24) on Thursday 11 November, 11 p.m.–3 a.m., and Saturday 13 November, 5–9 p.m.[4][5]
Decipher's 2001–2002 tournament site still listed the "EPP Overdrive Sealed Deck Format" with the same rules; the earliest preserved copy of that page is from 20 February 2002.[6][3] In August 2002 Decipher's Star Wars tournament resources page still listed it among its format notes.[7]
The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide keeps EPP Overdrive and names it as the one exception to its rule of one minute of game time per card.[2]
