Secret Squirrel is a sealed deck format in which each player plays the product they open as their deck, without swapping, drafting or a deck construction period. The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) defines it with one Jabba's Palace Official Tournament Sealed Deck (Jabba's Palace Sealed Deck) per player.[1]

  • Type: sealed deck
  • Defined by: Players Committee (Alternate Format Tournament Guide, 2015); played at Decipher's DecipherCon 2002
  • Card pool: one Jabba's Palace Sealed Deck per player; more product may be added
  • In use: by 2002 – listed in 2015
  • GEMP: none

The guide's rules:[1]

  • Each player needs one Jabba's Palace Official Tournament Sealed Deck. Additional product may be included.
  • Product is not exchanged or drafted, and there is no deck construction period. A deck consists of the product the player opens.
  • A player may look through the deck to find any Objectives, starting Locations and Starting Interrupt they wish to use. A player with more than one Objective may include only one.
  • Who goes first is decided at random. Both players may play Starting Interrupts of the same name.
  • A player who deploys a location chooses whether its Light Side or Dark Side game text faces them.
  • A player may deploy a unique Effect even if the opponent has a copy in play, may not persona replace the opponent's characters, and may convert their own location.

An optional rule set: the Light Side objective is randomly assigned to one player and the Dark Side objective to the other; all ability 1 characters are considered ability 2; and Lando With Vibro-Ax, The Camp and His Name Is Anakin are banned.[1]

In a Secret Squirrel event the Final Confrontation pairs the top two players, not the top Light and top Dark players.[1] Sealed games are timed at one minute per card in the deck.[1]

History

DecipherCon 2002's Star Wars schedule listed two "Secret Squirrel" sealed events of 4 games, on 31 October and 3 November 2002, and its Young Jedi schedule had a Secret Squirrel sealed event too.[2] The schedule does not say what product those events used. At the 2007 World Championship, Pat Johnson said he had won a Secret Squirrel tournament at Origins 2006.[3]

The name was also used for Cube play. The Players Committee's 2013 Game Formats page described a "Squirrel format" for the Cube, in which all cards of both sides are shuffled together and drafted in one pod.[4] The 2015 guide calls this the "Secret Squirrel" type of Watto's Cube event.[1] See Cube.
