Alternate Image

Alternate Image (AI) is a printing of a card (usually a Rare) with different artwork and the same title, lore, statistics, and game text. The Format to refer to such cards is Title (AI).

Decipher packed twenty-seven Alternate Image rares in three Episode I expansions: Tatooine (May 2001), Coruscant (August 2001), and Theed Palace (December 2001), nine in each set. Earlier Decipher expansions did not pack AI rares.

The Players Committee later issued virtual Alternate Image cards as tournament-legal printings of existing virtual cards with new artwork.

Identification

Printed Alternate Image cards are marked by a gold ring around the expansion icon. The matching regular printing has a gray or silver ring. The ring is the outer rim of the circular expansion symbol on the right of the card, below the destiny number. Collectors on BoardGameGeek in 2005 wrote that the metallic ring is silver or bronze/gold and that a magnifying glass is sometimes needed to tell the printings apart.

Packing and rarity

Each of the three Episode I expansions sold 11-card packs (MSRP $3.29) whose last card was a rare or an Alternate Image. The AI versions sit on the rare sheet as a subset of the matching title, so they are scarcer than the regular printing. The table shows the share of sheet copies of each such title that are the Alternate Image.

Set	AI rares	Sheet ratio (AI of that title)	Exceptions
Tatooine (May 2001)	9 (5 Light, 4 Dark)	2 of 8 copies	Boonta Eve Podrace nine times per side
Coruscant (August 2001)	9 (6 Light, 3 Dark)	1 of 4 copies	Coruscant: Jedi Council Chamber Light and Dioxis Dark five times each
Theed Palace (December 2001)	9 (6 Light, 3 Dark)	2 of 6 copies	Naboo Celebration Light and Master, Destroyers! Dark seven times each

From the 11×11 rare sheets, about one in thirteen Tatooine or Theed Palace packs contains an Alternate Image. About one in twenty-seven Coruscant packs does; Coruscant has sixty rares on the sheet rather than thirty or forty.

Gameplay

An Alternate Image and the matching regular printing are considered the same card for rules purposes. For example, if both cards were in hand, they would be lost to Monnok, and likewise uniqueness is shared. Similarly, the gold ring does not change the expansion icon, so an Alternate Image does not allow a persona replacement that the regular printing would not allow. A player may not persona replace Queen Amidala, Ruler Of Naboo with Queen Amidala, Ruler Of Naboo (AI) even when one of those cards is an Alternate Image.

Collecting

Collectors pay more for the Alternate Image than for the matching regular printing. CategoryOneGames listings on 9 October 2026 show the gap:

• Mace Windu (AI) (Coruscant) out of stock at $79.99; the regular Mace Windu from the same set listed Mint/Near Mint at $29.99.
• Darth Maul, Young Apprentice (AI) (Coruscant) Lightly Played at $287.99; the regular Darth Maul, Young Apprentice Lightly Played at $44.99.

These are dated dealer snapshots, not a price guide. Reflections III: A Collector's Bounty later reprinted Qui-Gon Jinn (AI) and Darth Maul (AI) as foils.

Decipher's complete American card list dated 23 August 2001 records a last update for "minor corrections and addition of alternate image cards," after Tatooine and during the Coruscant window.

Tatooine packed nine alternate-image rares (5 Light, 4 Dark).

Virtual Alternate Images

The Players Committee gave these virtual Alternate Image cards as event placement and participation prizes. GEMP distributes them in numbered booster packs, and the series below follow GEMP's pack lists; the committee's Official Alternate Images list groups cards by year, not series. Most were exclusive prizes for two years before public release.

Series 1

Series 1 packs were given for 8+ games in the February, March and May 2021 OCS. They were also participation prizes for Batmouse's 5th GEMPC, Jawas In Love, the 2021 Retro Event, 2021 Online Play Week and the 2021 MPC. Packs also went through the 2021 Retro Event bounty hunting program and, per league organizers, to active league participants in the first half of the season.
