GEMP (from Gempukku) is a browser rules engine for customizable card games with server-adjudicated play.[1][2] Marcin Sciesinski created it in 2011.[3][4][2] The first public table was for The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game.[5] Troy Biesterfeld forked Star Wars CCG from GEMP in 2013.[6] The Players Committee hosts a Star Wars CCG table at gemp.starwarsccg.org.[7][8] The table at play.swccg.com is an independent table that descends from a copy of the Players Committee GEMP.[9][10][2]

Players used Holotable for online play before GEMP.

Name

GEMP is short for Gempukku, the coming-of-age ceremony in Legend of the Five Rings.[2][3] The name is a play on Apprentice, a Magic: The Gathering online client.[2]

Origin

On 9 August 2011, Sciesinski proposed a browser client for The Lord of the Rings TCG on the Last Homely House forums.[3] He had written the first client for playing Legend of the Five Rings online, named Gempukku.[3] The first public beta of Gemp-LotR opened on 17 September 2011 at gempukku.com/gemp-lotr.[5]

Lord of the Rings TCG

LOTR TCG GEMP is hosted by the Player's Council at play.lotrtcgpc.net.[1][11] Christian McCarty is the maintainer of LOTR TCG GEMP.[12][1] The Player's Council About page says the Star Wars Players Committee uses the same software.[13]

Star Wars CCG

Players Committee GEMP

On 29 August 2013, Biesterfeld posted that he had started a project based on Gemp-LotR for Star Wars CCG.[6] The first table ran at tlbiesterfeld.servegame.com/gemp-swccg.[6] In June 2018 he stepped away, and the Players Committee took over management.[14] The Players Committee table is at gemp.starwarsccg.org/gemp-swccg/.[7] On 1 September 2020 the Players Committee announced that GEMP source code was on GitHub.[15][8]

play.swccg.com

play.swccg.com is an independent Star Wars CCG table.[16][9] It descends from a copy of the Players Committee GEMP.[10][9] Championship tables load Decipher and Players Committee cards. Fan products stay in isolated formats; see Custom formats. Planned work, including further Anything Goes rules and a True Sabacc game mode, is listed on GEMP planned features.
