The Star Wars CCG aftermarket is the secondary market for Decipher's Star Wars Customizable Card Game: singles, sealed product, misprints, and promotional items bought and sold after release. Decipher's Star Wars license ended in 2001. The remaining stock was then sold off at heavy discounts, and the supply of Decipher-era cards and promotional items has been fixed since.[1] According to Decipher CEO Warren Holland, customers had bought nearly $250 million of SWCCG product by 2002.[1]

Sealed product

Booster packs and starter decks

Decipher sold booster packs in display boxes and, for some sets, 60-card starter decks. Pack size, price, and box count changed over the game's life. [1]

Early 12-pack Enhanced Premiere boxes were not split evenly among the six premium cards, so Leia With Blaster Rifle and Han With Heavy Blaster Pistol were short prints. Later evenly split boxes carry a "#414 Custom Display" sticker on the bottom.[1] Some Enhanced Jabba's Palace cards ended up in Star Trek CCG The Trouble with Tribbles packs because of a packaging-plant error. Decipher replaced the packs when customers returned the cards.[1]

After the license ended, third parties bundled leftover packs into retail boxes; see Unofficial repackaged products. Leftover factory trays of commons, including a Cloud City Light Side commons tray, reached the secondary market.[45]

Rarity

Main article: Rarity

Rarity was printed as a letter (C, U, R) plus an optional number that set how often a card appeared on its print sheet. On the Premiere rare sheet, each R1 appears twice and each R2 four times, so an R1 is half as common as an R2.[1] Other rarities include F (fixed, starter-deck cards) and XR (the exclusive rares in Death Star II starter decks). UR marks Death Star II's two ultra rares, Luke Skywalker, Jedi Knight and Emperor Palpatine.[1]

Foils came in several forms:

  • Endor had an 18-card foil subset.[1]
  • The Reflections sets were all-foil chase sets. Reflections has 87 very rare, 25 super rare, and 2 ultra rare foils (Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker). On its foil sheets an ultra rare appears once, a super rare twice, and a very rare four times.[1]
  • Tatooine, Coruscant, and Theed Palace added Alternate Image (AI) rares. On the Tatooine rare sheet each rare appears eight times, and two of those eight are the AI version for cards that have one.[1]
  • Promotional foils, 28 in all, were foil copies of earlier cards given out at tournaments and as purchase incentives (2000–2002). Each tournament gave one to the winner and one to a random player; a new card rotated in each month and stayed in use for two months.[1]

Collation could change real scarcity. Japanese Hoth rare sheets were collated 3 Light Side to 1 Dark Side, so Dark Side rares from that set are harder to find.[1]

Misprints and production errors

Cards with a corrected version:[1]

  • R-3PO (Hoth) showed the image of K-3PO. Decipher swapped returned copies for a shrink-wrapped corrected card; it said 110,000 wrong copies were printed and that returned cards would be destroyed.
  • Dodge (Cloud City) appeared four times on its common sheet, once with the last word "free" missing.
  • Asteroid Sanctuary (Dagobah) was reprinted with errata, by mail and in Scrye 4.4 (November 1997).
  • Electrobinoculars and Tatooine: Lars' Moisture Farm in the Premiere Introductory Two-Player Game had incorrect game text.
  • Eriadu in early Jedi Packs had a white dot where the dot should be red.
  • Turn It Off! Turn It Off! (Hoth): some copies have an extra "0" after the lore's closing quote.

Production errors that are not separate card versions include blank cards, "Premiere Blue" cards, roller-mark embossing on some Death Star II sheets, and miscuts. Blank cards come in six known front and back combinations, from Hoth on; "Premiere Blue" cards were tinted by dried-up yellow ink.[1] A Hoth test run printed the 27 Light Side rares with Dark Side backs. It was never released, but single cards and uncut sheets reached the secondary market through former employees.[1]

Notable collectibles

  • Executive Gift Set (2001): about 250 boxed sets, each holding almost two complete sets of Premiere Limited, made as gifts for Lucasfilm and Decipher executives. Most were never given out, and they reached the secondary market after the license ended.[1]
  • Oversized cards: 5×7-inch versions of Aurra Sing (AI) and two Mara Jade cards were Decipher Store gifts for orders over $20. Reflections boxes had 5×7 objective box toppers.[1]
  • Box and case toppers: Reflections II had four foil box toppers and a Japanese Darth Vader foil case topper.[1]

Pricing history

Late sets are worth the most, not early ones. The last Decipher sets had smaller print runs, while early sets were printed heavily.[46][47]

  • 2009: a distributor restocked Reflections III booster boxes at $294 and called the set the hardest of the Reflections sets to find. It said Theed Palace and Coruscant were also very hard to find.[46] Death Star II was then one of the more expensive sets to buy.[48]
  • 2020: sealed SWCCG product sold on eBay at prices a Quiet Speculation writer found surprising, and ten loose booster packs sold for $47.[47] By December, sealed product was "selling for never-before-seen prices".[49]
  • 2021: booster boxes sold for at least $500 and up to more than $2,000, and a top non-foil card went for about $300 on eBay.[50]
  • 2024: hobbyDB ranked AI and foil singles among the ten most valuable Star Wars trading cards in its database, alongside Topps cards. One was Queen Amidala, Ruler Of Naboo (AI) ($340).[51]
  • 2025–2026: sealed Coruscant booster boxes (30 packs, $3.29 MSRP each) sold on eBay for $1,676 to $3,200. Sealed Cloud City boxes (60 packs, $2.50 each) sold for $255 to $449.[52][53][1]
