Enhanced Jabba's Palace is the 22nd Star Wars CCG product, published by Decipher in January 2000. It is twelve premium cards in four unique die-cut packs (4 Light Side, 8 Dark Side).
Each pack has three premiums (the first visible through the window) plus four Jabba's Palace Limited boosters. MSRP $14.95; 12 packs per box. The four Jabba's Palace boosters are reprints.[1]
The four window cards are See-Threepio, Master Luke, Boushh, and Mara Jade, The Emperor's Hand.
Some Enhanced Jabba's Palace cards leaked into Star Trek CCG The Trouble with Tribbles packs. Decipher offered replacement boosters if those cards were returned.[1]
Promotion
Decipher marketed the set around Mara Jade, The Emperor's Hand. Model Shannon Baksa is the photographic likeness. The publisher's summary opened "Can you say Mara Jade? Finally, the fabled character (from the Timothy Zahn novels and 'Tales From Jabba's Palace') comes alive as one of the 12 new Premium cards for this enhanced set." Each of the four die-cut tuck boxes revealed its face card so buyers knew which three premiums they were getting.[2]
Justin Pakes's Decipher Product Spotlight began its card-by-card preview on 17 December 1999 with "Are You Ready To Return To The Palace?" It opened with Mara: "Where else could you start your examination of EJP but with the renowned Mara?" He called her "nothing less than a Dark Side main character" on statistics alone, then walked duel text, spy/Undercover, and the first Dark Side dual Alien/Imperial persona. Attendees at DecipherCon 1999 had already seen some EJP cards in the Art Gallery.[3]
On 10 January 2000, two days before the 12 January street date, Pakes listed all twelve premiums. Mara Jade, The Emperor's Hand is the visible facing card of her pack, with You Can Either Profit By This... / Or Be Destroyed and Bossk With Mortar Gun.[4]
Star Wars Insider 47 (January 2000), Lucasfilm's official fan magazine, put Baksa on the cover. It ran Scott Chernoff's six-page feature Mara Jade: Flesh and Blood (pages 52–57) on the photoshoot. Decipher creative director Dan Burns told Chernoff that because Mara was a Power Card in Enhanced Jabba's Palace, he thought of "fleshing her out". He called the shoot "a really big production for just a little card" that had to pass through Lucasfilm. The magazine printed the finished Mara card on page 54 and listed "STAR WARS CUSTOMIZABLE CARD GAME: JABBA'S PALACE ENHANCED (1999, Decipher)" in its Mara bibliography.[5]
