- Description: Greasy fast deck that Nate Meeker and I played at Origins 2004.
Strategy
Strategy, an introduction of sorts:
This is a somewhat dated deck, I used it at Origins this year after playtesting several dark side decks with my friend, Nate Meeker. The two of us played this deck at Origins, pretty much the same, card for card (he had an extra force field instead of Tempest 6). It went 2-1 for each of us, for a combined 4-2 record. My loss came in the very last round to someone playing a very decent JCC mains deck (yes, you read that right!) It was basically TRM but utilized the JCC as its start. Nates loss came to profit, which caught both of us completely by surprise. In testing we figured that would be a tough matchup, but figured, who plays profit? Well, obviously quite a few people, there was a bunch of them running around origins and it even placed at worlds.
Given that we lived in a cave, and there was no real meta to test for (because no one was posting any real tourney reports earlier this summer), in our testing this deck did very well. It dealt with TRM decently, handled LU(v) if the opponent got goldenrody and came to Wattos Junkyard too early, destroyed WYS, LSC, and any other lightside deck that took a few turns to setup. This deck struggled against Hidden Swarm, which is why we played the Security Precautions, the Overload, the monnok, as well as the Virago. Against all other decks, we dont need the extra ship, and we wanted the best pilot for the ground, hence Xizor.
Play breakdown:
First, pull Rendili. Then pull Greedo or Reegesk (depending on what your playing against) with Ket Maliss. Then discard YCHF & MP for Search and Destroy. Activate 5. Deploy Watto from Reserve, deploy Greedo or Reegesk, flip. Use Youre a Slave to make the opponent lose 2 (you can use the chance cube that you pull with Watto if you like). Play Search and Destroy. If you drew a starship or pilot, play Rendili, and play a starship at the system. If they started a battleground system, you may just keep Rendili, and take their system. Pull your docking bay. Its all about speed and reckless play. Make them lose a force for S&D. Draw up, but leave 1 force! Its a must, it lets you bluff a barrier. So, before the opponent even took a turn, they have lost 3 force.
As Mickey said in Rocky, greasy, lightning fast, speed
2nd Turn (assuming they couldnt come after you). Drain for 3, make them lose 2 for Youre a Slave, lose to search and destroy. By now, Reegesk is probably stealing stuff for you to use (or lose to damage).
This deck is fast, and will usually trick your opponent into making a careless mistake (such as sending Luke in Rogue 1 to Wattos junkyard too early).
Youve got loads of evasion (barriers, force field, tempest scout 6) but dont push your luck, you want to get backup to the junkyard and Mos Espa during the first few turns. Greedo (v) is really awesome with Oota-Goota Solo, and serves as a pretty solid deterrent.
Thats all there is too it, draw up your beats. If your opponent gets sneaky and leaves 2, then you have to use a character with Youre a Slave. Thats fine though, its sort of chokes them in a retarded way.
Card Choices:
Lando (v): Best DS card in the game. Unless you are playing Invasion, you should have Lando in your deck.
Xizor, Prophetess(v), palps, sidious: The perfect ground backup for Wattos junkyard or Mos Espa.
Alter: I hate Goo Nee Tay. I hate Flash of Insight (v).
Control & Set For Stun: Flexible card, can use it to cause a beat, can use it to kill sandwhirl for Hidden Swarm, or cancel a big drain.
Force Field: Remember, its lost function can protect Watto!
Ghhhk x 2???: Reckless play requires two save your wookie cards.
Overload: Combine with Lando, this card is so much fun.
Chance Cube: Can mess with your opponent when they see you pull it first turn. You can then use it Youre a Slave. Nate and I argued for 45 minutes on the merit of this card, and then argued about what to take out. Nate was right, it was a really good card to keep.
Deck Matchups:
Hunters Hidden X-Swarm, with combat vehicles: Ugh! Clever opponent will put the desert smack dab in the middle of Mos Espa and Wattos Junkyard, and start a sandwhirl. This matchup is really bad for you. I theorize that the best thing to do is play as aggressive as ever, try to cause early damage, you may get lucky and top deck a system! Use the hidden base counters (overload, Monnok, Security Precautions). Activation will not be a problem. Setting up Zuckuss in Mist Hunter with Boba Fett on Crack is very key for probing. You are going to lose anywhere from 7 to 22
TIGIH Obi Poop: Its a split. Your fast damage is going to hurt them a little, Luke doesnt satisfy Search and Destroy. But, if you have a bad draw, the constant mains and adding 5 to power can hurt. You will either lose small or win medium
WYS: Auto-win. Afterall, this is the objective that No Money, No Parts, No Deal was released to beat. You will win by at least 12.
LSC: Fast Damage will offset their fast damage. Its nice that the Jedi have to stay on Naboo. You should be able to run resistance to their setup more then they can run interference to your setup.
LU(v): They just put so many cards on the table. They are forced into a decision. Come after Watto early (and possibly overextend). Or ignore Watto for 3 turns, and then eat loads of force loss. Depending on what your opponent does, and how much luck you have in drawing counter beats for Luke in Rogue 1, you should win
TRM (or JCC Mains, I guess): They stop some of the early damage with Search and Destroy, and they seem to have an infinite amount of mains to come (thanks to Civil Disorder (v), Flash of Insight (v), Draw Their Fire). Uggh. It comes down to who is going to counter beat who the hardest. Remember, it may serve you well to not draw battle destiny occasionally so you can counter beat, especially early.
Profit: Honestly, I think this is going to play similar to TRM. Nate played this matchup in origins, and he said it went pretty badly. Master Luke wrecks Watto. But some profits dont use him. Nate took the free aliens and regretted it, you may not want to take the aliens. I can post a followup after I test more.
Decks we saw at Origins, but didnt plan on:
MBO: You are too fast.
MWYHL: You are too fast...
And I cannot remember the other deck Nate played. But he won. Ill ask him next time I see him.
Conclusions:
Im glad that I played this deck. My last game at Origins was important (any kind of win got me into the top 4), I wish I would have grabbed Jedi Resilance, but who thinks of that! Even then, it probably wouldnt have mattered. Watto is a somewhat tough deck to play, but if you are playing an opponent who doesnt know how to deal with early damage, it is a pretty big advantage.
Disclaimer:
I dont want to take any undue credit for this deck. The original can be found here, Nate and I just updated it for todays meta, as best as we could.
