Evan Lorentz ("Mot the Barber") was a Decipher game designer. He is credited on Decipher's Jedi Knights Trading Card Game team (2001): the rulebook credits list him by name, with no role, under "The Decipher Jedi Knights Team".[1] He also designed for Decipher's Star Trek CCG and Austin Powers CCG, and co-hosted Radio Free Decipher.

Star Trek CCG player and Ambassador

Lorentz, of Littleton, Colorado, became a Star Trek CCG Ambassador in December 1996, one of the first. He was known in the Star Trek CCG community as "Mot the Barber", author of the "Useless" Card Reviews and a Borg specialist.[2] He won the 1998 GenCon Open and was the only player that year to qualify for the Star Trek CCG World Championships with a Borg deck. He said he had written over 100 strategy articles on the game.[5] Decipher published his 1998 World Finals deck, "The Killer B's".[6]

DecipherCon 1999

DecipherCon 1999 ran 11–14 November 1999. Decipher's Radio Free Decipher feeds there included "Evan Lorentz, AP designer, tells all" (Thursday) and "Evan's thoughts on Round 1 of ST finals" (Saturday).[7][8] A Decipher photograph shows him and Super Vol Kim Burns briefing Star Wars Insider writer Richard Handley on the Star Trek CCG World Finals.[9]

DecipherCon 2000

At DecipherCon 2000 (5–8 October 2000) Lorentz, Bill Martinson and Tim Ellington ran the Star Trek CCG Design-a-Card seminar, as reported by Francis Lalumiere.[10] Decipher's soundbytes for 5 October included Lorentz on the deck lists in the Star Trek CCG World Finals.[11]

Star Trek CCG design

In 2000 Lorentz wrote "The Amazing Morphing Icon" for Decipher's The Trouble With Tribbles expansion pages, on the history of the original-series icon.[12] In August 2000 Decipher reported that Lorentz, who had answered Star Trek CCG rules questions, had moved to another position at Decipher.[13] In 2002 he wrote design logs for the Star Trek CCG Second Edition as "Evan Lorentz, Game Designer".[14] The Second Edition rulebook (2002) credits "Second Edition Design: Evan Lorentz, Brad DeFruiter, Tim Ellington".[15] The Call to Arms rulebook (2003) credits "Second Edition Design: Evan Lorentz, Brad DeFruiter".[16]

At DecipherCon 2002 he and Tim Ellington were billed for the Star Trek CCG Design-a-card Seminar. The Daily News report has Lorentz and Brad De Fruiter, "Star Trek CCG's intrepid designers", presenting it for Second Edition.[17][18] He gave Second Edition demos,[19] and he judged the Star Trek CCG World Championship final.[4]

Radio Free Decipher

Lorentz co-hosted Radio Free Decipher with Kyle Heuer in 2002 and hosted later episodes himself. As a Star Trek CCG designer he discussed the Motion Pictures expansion, and he helped proofread the foreign-language Lord of the Rings TCG press sheets.[20][21]

Austin Powers CCG

On a March 2002 episode of Radio Free Decipher, Lorentz said he had "a pretty heavy hand in the design" of Decipher's Austin Powers CCG. The same episode previewed the Star Trek CCG Motion Pictures expansion, for which he explained the renaming of the Excelsior icon as the Classic Films icon.[22][23] Decipher had already billed him as "AP designer" at DecipherCon 1999.[7]
