Card back, Star Trek: The Next Generation CCG (Decipher, 1994).

The Star Trek Customizable Card Game (Star Trek CCG) was Decipher's first customizable card game. Tom Braunlich and Rollie Tesh designed it. Decipher released it in 1994 as Star Trek: The Next Generation Customizable Card Game.[1][2] In 2002 Decipher relaunched the game as Second Edition.[2] Franklin Kenter won the 2002 World Championship at DecipherCon 2002 over John Corbett.[3]

Players scored by completing missions and solving dilemmas along a spaceline of locations.[4] Braunlich and Tesh called location-based play "the central element of all of our CCGs".[5] Living on Bainbridge Island near Wizards of the Coast, they met Magic: The Gathering designer Richard Garfield and told Wizards they would not copy Magic.[6]

Relation to SWCCG

Work on Star Wars CCG began right after the Star Trek launch, before the Star Wars license was signed.[7] Braunlich moved to the Star Wars game before the Star Trek game was finished.[6]

SWCCG kept several Star Trek ideas: 60-card decks, film stills as card art, a row of locations, a split between "noun" cards (characters and locations) and "verb" cards (interrupts), and a policy of not rotating old cards out.[6]

Bill Martinson later led design of the Star Trek game. He also edited SWCCG card text with Warren Holland.[8]
