The 2001 Decipher World Championship was the 6th Star Wars CCG World Championship. Play was 15–18 November 2001 among 48 players at the Sheraton Oceanfront Hotel, Virginia Beach, Virginia.[1][2] DeckTech billed it as the World Championship at FreedomCon, after Decipher cancelled DecipherCon 2001.[3][4]

Bastian Winkelhaus of Germany defeated Martin Akesson of Sweden, winning both final games with a Dark Tatooine Occupation deck ("All Your Base Are Belong to EUROPE") and a Light Quiet Mining Colony deck.[2][5][6] Monica Jones, Decipher's vice-president of marketing, wrote on 9 November 2001 that Decipher would not recognize FreedomCon as the World Championships.[7] The Players Committee counts the win as the 2001 title.[5] As FreedomCon champion, Winkelhaus received a Day 2 bye for 2002, as did Matt Sokol.[8]

The constructed pool was Premiere - Reflections III.

Results

The final eight played these Dark and Light decks.[9][10] QMC is Quiet Mining Colony. LSC is Lightsaber Combat. Players called the Dark Tatooine Occupation deck All Your Base. Winkelhaus posted that list as All Your Base Are Belong to EUROPE. It starts no Objective and uses two copies of the Effect Tatooine Occupation.[10][9] Bastian Winkelhaus won both final games; the two semifinal losers, Hayes Hunter and Brian Hunter, are listed together as 3–4 because no third-place match is recorded and later accounts differ on their order (Hayes Hunter's deck page records him as 3rd).

Cancellation of DecipherCon 2001

Decipher had scheduled DecipherCon 2001 for the same dates and hotel, with a $50,000 cash purse across its games.[3] On 3 October 2001 Warren Holland cancelled the convention, citing September 11 airline-safety concerns. Decipher donated the $50,000 championship purse to September 11 relief.[30][4] On Radio Free Decipher two days later, Holland said the decision was purely about the safety of players, staff and volunteers. Many would travel from around the world, and military alerts in the Norfolk area were high. He said the license and finances played no part.[31] The roughly 300 players already qualified across Decipher's games would choose the charities to receive the prize money. Decipher had held back web ticket sales for some time before deciding.[32]

Decipher's Star Wars, Young Jedi, and Jedi Knights licenses ended 31 December 2001. Tournament support moved to the volunteer Players Committee.[33]

Discrepancies

Where a source disagrees with the record on this page, the page keeps the record and notes the difference here.

  • The hub lists the Dark Let Them Make The First Move list as Alex George's (2001 Decipher World Championship Alex George DS). Matt Scott's report, also posted from Alex George's account, says Scott wrote it under a friend's name, and its Dark losses to Bastian Winkelhaus and Chris Praskac match that deck page: the list is probably Matt Scott's.[14]
  • Alex George writes that he had not been to a tournament since September 2001 and that Matt Scott 'had just been to FCON' and played the decks he copied; the Worlds hub and its deck page list Alex George as a Worlds player.[37]
  • Justin Desai's report counts 65 players on Day 1 ('65 people in all means 14-15 make it to day 2'); the hub gives 48 players.[28]
  • Brian Fred writes that Matt Scott 'went 4-4' in the Worlds tournament; the hub lists Matt Scott with a 3–4 record from his own report.[29]
