Classic

Classic is a constructed format on GEMP (code classic). Its card pool is the same as Open, with three banned icons.[1] Scott Lingrell ran a Classic Format playtest at DecipherCon 2002.[2] The Players Committee made Classic an official format for all sanctioned events on 31 March 2003.[3]

The card pool is Decipher-printed set ids 1–14 (Premiere through Theed Palace) and premium ids 101–112. It also includes current Virtual Sets 0–27 (ids 200–227) and the Virtual Premium Set (id 301). Cards with the Defensive Shield, Episode I or Maintenance icon are banned.[1][4]

Deck size

Default deck size on GEMP 60 cards

The GEMP format definition sets no deck size, so GEMP uses its default of 60 cards.[1][5]

Players Committee definition

The Players Committee Alternate Format Tournament Guide (revised September 2015) lists Classic among its closed environment formats. Players build constructed decks from any Decipher cards or Virtual Cards (Legacy or Standard, depending on the event), except:[6]

  • any card, including Defensive Shields, with an Episode I icon. The guide notes that Desperate Times has been clarified not to have the Episode I icon, so it is legal.
  • any maintenance card, for example Blizzard 4 or Lando Calrissian, Scoundrel.

The GEMP definition also bans every card with the Defensive Shield icon.[1]

Players Committee history

The first Classic Format event was a non-sanctioned playtest tournament at DecipherCon 2002 on Friday 1 November 2002, run by Scott Lingrell to gauge players' acceptance of the format; Drew Scott won it and $35.[7] Over the winter the Players Committee ran a Winter Classic Contest for tournament directors and players. On 31 March 2003 it announced the winners (1st Jacob Taylor of San Marcos, Texas; 2nd Christian Kriesel of Madison, Wisconsin; 3rd David Kangas of Brush Prairie, Washington) and that, "effective immediately, Classic Format will be considered an official format for all sanctioned events", including the Championship Circuit, with a Classic Format Subcommittee reviewing the ban list; Virtual Set 5 was to include two alternative Starting Effects aimed at Classic.[3] The first official ban list (31 March 2003) banned all cards with an Episode 1 icon, all cards with a maintenance cost, all "insert" cards and Watch Your Step / This Place Can Be A Little Rough.[8]

In 2003 several Championship Circuit events were played in Classic: the California, Ohio and Virginia State Championships and the United Kingdom National Championship,[9][10] a Classic Format Open Qualifier in Vancouver, Washington, on 2 August 2003,[11] and one of the two Day 1 qualifiers of the 2003 World Championship.[12]
