Winfried Sommerfeld

Winfried Sommerfeld (also written Winfred Sommerfeld) was a Decipher Squadron Member, Red 41 in the Ralltiir region, from Bochum, Germany.[1] He first worked with Decipher at the Essen game fair in October 1996, where he helped Red Leader Jonathan Quesenberry teach the game to German-speaking visitors. Carol Wisely then offered him squadron membership.[1]
He directed German, Austrian and Italian regional qualifiers for the World Championships,[1] including the 2000 Ralltiir Regionals.[2] His squadron page says one of his events set a European attendance record of 118 players.[1] His friends from the game include Doug Taylor, Kevin Reitzel, Tim Courtney, Tim Pavuk, Paul Todd Feldman and Magnus Larsson.[1]
He and his wife Marianne came to the United States to sightsee and play Star Wars. One stop was Turlock, California, where he played Paul Todd Feldman. Feldman's fan site, Torch Industries, covered the visit as "Germany vs Turlock".[3]
In their own words
I have been a Star Wars fan since 1977, when I first saw the movie (I was 12 then). I have grown up with Star Wars and I really would have to say it has changed my life. I bought my first Star Wars CCG cards in 1996, and since then, I've been addicted to it.
The first contact I had with Decipher was in October 1996 at the Essen (Germany) Gamefair. I helped Red Leader, Jonathan Quesenberry, teach Star Wars CCG to the German-speaking visitors. Soon after, Carol Wisely offered me squadron membership.
Since then, I have traveled for and with Star Wars CCG. In addition to German Regional Qualifier events for the annual World Championships, I have directed Austrian and Italian Regional Qualifiers. I take every opportunity to do demos and tournaments, and my tournaments are usually well attended.
The European tournament attendance record of 118 players is one thing I am proud of (I must have been a recruiting officer in a past life), but I'm even more proud to count
among my friends some Decipher personalities.
Thanks to Star Wars CCG I have made a lot of friends all over the world. I want to mention just a few. There's Doug Taylor (Red 4), Kevin Reitzel (and many more players in Santa Barbara and California), Tim Courtney, Tim Pavuk (Red 52), Paul Feldman (Red 16), Magnus Larsson (Red 64) and more in Italy, Austria and Germany.
Personal things: I'm married to the wonderful Marianne, my personal R-2 unit, without whom I would be lost. Like me she is interested in everything Star Wars. My other interests are: movies, role playing games, and strategic computer games like Age of Empires and Star craft.[4]
