Strategy

By Andrew Kato, Red 54[1]

I have a deck that I like to call (in the Jay Ward tradition) "Rycar's Sanctuary" or "Get Set Up For Your Rycar's Run." As you may have already guessed, this deck makes good use of the interrupt "Closer?!." There are several things that make this card a natural complement to Rycar's Run and Asteroid Decks:

Rycar's Run will most likely be performed by the Millenium Falcon, probably with either Han Solo or Chewbacca piloting. These two and Wedge Antilles are arguably staple cards in any LS Asteroid, no, any LS Space deck. The fact that these great pilots are all smugglers lets you take advantage of the free movement afforded

Destiny 6 is a good thing to have when Imperial capital ships start following you into the field. With a full field out, drawing a 6 for asteroid destiny will wipe out virtually any starship, with or without Deflector Shield Generators. Heck, drawing Destiny 6 is great for a ton of stuff, including battle destiny.

Being a Used Interrupt, the card cycles back into the deck, and the free movement can be done repeatedly throughout the game. This is critical if you're going to be employing circular retrieval around Rycar's Run. We've all heard the rage about Traffic Control and Yoda Stew, but what some players don't realize is that all Used Interrupts basically have those features "built-in." I just love those high destiny used space interrupts like Out of Nowhere and A Few Manuevers - also great in Asteroid Decks. The fact the card will be cycling in and out of the deck ensures you get the benefit of not only its game text when you play it, but also its destiny 6 when drawn for destiny.

Granted, Rogue Asteroid and Close Call are rarely found in any DS decks... but versatility is never a bad thing. Having options to cancel cards that could potentially help the Dark Side in the Asteroid Field - where you'll be setting up shop in an Asteroid Sanctuary deck - is nice to have around. I believe the more things you can do with a card, the more overall usefulness it has, even if you rarely use that "other" option.

One of the main drawbacks to Rycar's Run is that it should take 4 turns to complete in a full field. Using Closer?! speeds up completion of Rycar's Run tremendously and makes it possible to use Rycar's Run in a circular retrieval scheme. You've seen circular retrieval with On The Edge and Death Star Plans... the next time you make an Asteroid Sanctuary deck, give Closer?! a closer look, and start doing circular retrieval Rycar's Run style.
