The 2014 Virtual Card Pool Reset was the Players Committee decision to cut the SWCCG virtual card pool to a small base set rather than clean it up with errata. The Advocate Council announced it as Reset of Standard Format on 25 July 2014.[1] The first post-reset legal lists, Virtual Set 0 and a Virtual Set 1 Preview, were posted as PDFs on 25 September 2014.[2]

Why reset

The Advocates weighed a cleanup (surgical errata or scrapping problem cards) against a complete reset that trimmed virtual cards to a small base set. They chose the reset unanimously.[1] Their reasons included one PDF of legal virtual text instead of mass errata to remember, past problems with mass-errata changes, and design opportunities for volunteers in a smaller pool.[1] They also cited casual players' time budgets and wanted a more complete fix than a “band-aid”.[1]

Base set and text rule

The base set was planned at roughly 75 cards per side.[1][3] Virtual cards that can go in a reserve deck kept their game text: “If you know a card now, you will know the card post-Reset”.[1] The announcement planned a preliminary base list by 1 August 2014 and beta play at Worlds in Toronto and the European Championship.[1]

Virtual Set 0 (Base Set) cards were unchanged from their pre-reset versions except for some Defensive Shields; Virtual Set 1 Preview cards had various minor tweaks.[2]

Formats: Standard and Legacy

  • New Standard: post-reset virtual cards. A new graphical V-set icon was planned, and existing slips stayed usable for cards that remained legal.[1]
  • New Legacy: all pre-reset virtual cards, in a Master Legacy PDF. The pool stays fixed unless D&D later supports Legacy balance.[1][2]
  • The VS0 and VS1 Preview PDFs were legal immediately for Standard sanctioned play.[2]

What was not changed

  • The Advocates had no plans to change Decipher cards or Decipher rules.[1]
  • There was no set rotation after the Reset, following a player survey.[1]

Packaging: blocks → V0 then V1

The Advocates planned to drop blocks for single sets: base set V0, then a new numbering starting at V1.[1] These are Virtual Set 0 and Virtual Set 1.

Virtual Block 9.2

The announcement said V-set 9.2 would not be released in its current form. A mini set of about 12 cards for Worlds would replace it, and the intern work would be remolded later.[1] VB 9.1 (Republic at War) had shipped on 10 January 2014. See Cancelled Virtual Sets.
