Star Wars CCG World Championship

DecipherCon 2000 ran on 5–8 October 2000 at the Doubletree Resort and Conference Center in Kissimmee, Florida.[1] The Star Wars CCG tournament drew 72 players. The final matched Yannick Lapointe of Montreal, Canada, against Matt Sokol of Albany, New York.[1]

In Game 1 Lapointe played a Bring Him Before Me deck. Sokol played a space deck built on Hidden Base. He forgot to include the Luke card it needed and lost by 20.[1] In Game 2 Lapointe played a Mind What You Have Learned Jedi-training deck. He activated all his Force without a reserve deck, and Sokol's Dark Side deck won the game and the title.[1]

Sokol's win was the first American Star Wars CCG world title since Matt Potter in 1998. It was Lapointe's third World Championship.[1] The two had often played each other since meeting at the Ottawa Grand Slam. Sokol said: "I'm going to DisneyWorld!"[1]

In Game 1 Parrise's Anakin deck beat Vincent's tank deck by 19. The two swapped decks for Game 2, and Vincent won it by 26 to take the title.[1] Vincent had placed seventh in the previous year's Star Trek CCG finals.[1]

Guests and other events

The convention introduced the DecipherCon Olympics, a three-day event of card-sorting, card-house-building and card-tossing. Players attended seminars on card design and DigitalDeck's online card game. They also saw the new Jedi Knights Trading Card Game.[1]

Shannon Baksa and Michonne Bourriague signed comics, photographs and cards. Baksa had first attended the year before, after the Mara Jade card. She said: "Everyone here is so nice, and I love to be Mara!"[1] Bourriague, Aurra Sing in The Phantom Menace, said: "It's been so wonderful being able to say I was in Star Wars."[1] Fans also saw Chronicle Books' Aurra Sing: Dawn of the Bounty Hunters with its 12-inch Aurra Sing figure.[1]
