- Description: Is your deck 8-0 against the top 5 in the world? Has your deck promted the creation 76 virtual cards to counter it? Has your deck boosted you to such status in the sccwg community that you have groupies?
Strategy
Before I go into stategy I want to list the deck's record at major events and who it has beat. It's my opinion that this deck is one of the top ever created and it's record speaks for itself. Also the fact that it catapulted two college kids from scrubs to major winners in less than a year.
Record Vs. Top Players:
Brian Hunter 1-0
Hayes Hunter 1-0
Eric Hunter 3-0
Jon Chu 4-2
Clint Hays 2-0
Brian Fred 2-0
Bastian Wilkenhaus 0-1
Michael Raveling 0-1
Alex Klamerodt 1-0
Steve Brentson 2-1
Chris Praskac 1-0
Grahame Neal 1-0
...In addition I am 3-0 vs Mike Gemme playing this deck and he is 2-0 against me when he plays it...That's 23-5 vs people you'd be lucky, lucky, to split with.
Its record at Majors:
Mass Regionals '02 3-0
Jersey Regionals '02 4-0
New York City Mini Open 2-1
Origins National Championship 8-0
Fredom Con II 8-1
Wordls 5-3
Chicago DPC/Open 9-1
Aight...Now onto the strategt/History of this deck. Before my regional way back in April of 2002 Myself and Andy Klema came up with this deck. Back then it was in it's rawest form; with cards like Ponda Baba and dark manuevers. Soon after that Michael Gemme tweaked it into what would become THE dominant deck of summer 2k2. In its early stages it was unbeatable...it was kept under wraps for the most part. Finally the Players commitee decided it got to powerful and created many many virtual cards to **try** and stop it. Some of them including: demotion, Leia, For Luck, Scanner techs, and more.
For the Summer of 2002 Myself and Michael Gemme remained a step ahead of the players commitee. Following the relase of virtual set #2 we played four demotion killers, at freedom con we played senate when everyone thought it would be dead and noone would play it. At worlds our luck finally ran out when the majority of the decks we played against each packed 2 Leia's AND another senate hate card (v).
The credit for the notereity of this deck must go to Michael Gemme. He brought it to the scene at Origins--Much shyte was talked about our success up to that point being a fluke, and when it was all said and done he was the one with the fame and glory that comes with winning Origins. He also has tweaked it to what it is today, I would say that it's roughly 15 cards different from what it was a year ago.
The credit for the creation of this deck sometimes unjustly soley falls to me, but Andy Klema deserves alot of the credit. The 1st prototype of this deck contained lateral damages, tallon rolls and no beats. Andy changed like 10 cards prior to our regional and launched it into 2002. The credit does NOT deserve to go to random shmoes who happened to throw ties into senate, as some people have claimed. I heard someone say that Steven turner played ties and senate so he's the real inovator of this idea...bull crap I can play vader in a huntdown doesn't mean I'm the inovator of a deck type. Oh and name a big tournament someone other than myself or mike has won with this decktype--bam done fisnihed.
The last two paragraphs served as to give you some backround on a deck that we tried to keep as much on the Dl as possible. I'll go into matchups now with some guest appearences.
WYS: I built this deck way back when to beat wys. In april of 2002 nothing matched up so well vs all types of wys than senate. And in april of 2002 all anyone was playing was wys. Setting up your senators is key, taking space is relatively easy with baron and other ships, and your ground forces work to knock off whatever they put to ground. Obviously the cancel drain effect is key. Late game if you speard you can win the drain race easily, but it usually doesn't go that far. Usually a win by 18-28. The deck has lost 1 game to wys, and won over 10-12.
QMC: Pretty much the same deal as wys; taking the system is relatively easy, getting a beatdown is a little harder but once they start losing cards to teh drain in space their evasion will dwindle and you'll most likely get the beats.
Combat: A little trickier because you cannot cancel their drains, but if they do not take a system you win the drain/damage race. And if you can get a beatdown it's even better. There are so many tricks that myself and Mike have developed in this matchup--you really just have to play the game but its a relatively easy match.
Senate Vs Senate. I've never played this matchup but at Origins Mike Gemme played against Hayes Hunetr using LS Seante and won pretty decisevely so I figured i'd let him tell you about how to play this match, "I would say that the most important thing is not putting down senators first unless you could put down four or five at once, or just three with a leader of ability
