Team Event Format
Team Event Format is Decipher's team scoring for Star Wars CCG tournaments: teams of three or four players enter a normal sanctioned event, and each team's three best finishing places are added together. Decipher ran team events at conventions in 1999 and closed each season with a team event at DecipherCon.[1][2]
- Type: team scoring on a constructed or sealed-deck event
- Defined by: Decipher (1999)
- Card pool: that of the host event
- In use: 1999 – 2000
- Also called: Team Swiss scoring; DecipherCon Team Challenge (DecipherCon 1999 and 2000);[3][4] DecipherCon Constructed Team Event (DecipherCon 2000 schedule)[5]
- GEMP: none
Rules
Decipher's 1999 rules:[1]
- "The beauty of the Team Event format is that it seamlessly blends with normal Constructed or Sealed Deck protocols." Players not on a team may play in the same tournament.
- Teams have 3 or 4 players. A captain picks players from his area (city, town or school). A registered player must play at least 2 tournaments with a team before switching.
- At least two teams must register with the director before play for team scoring to apply. The tournament itself is run as normal.
- After the event the director adds the three highest finishing places of each team; a fourth player's place does not count. The lowest total wins.
- Ties are broken first by head-to-head record between the two teams' players, then by total team differential; if still tied, it is a true tie.
History
In 1999 Decipher listed team events at Origins 99, GenCon Game Fair 99, Euro GenCon Antwerp, San Diego ComiCon, Spiel 99 Essen and DecipherCon 99, each "offering a large 4-piece trophy for the winning team". Teams registered on Decipher's website.[2] "Decipher will end this year's season of Team Events by holding the crowning Team event tournament at DecipherCon 99."[1] DecipherCon 1999 scheduled the Star Wars DecipherCon Team Challenge (SW.06) on Sunday 14 November 1999, 10 a.m.–4 p.m.; results are on DecipherCon 1999 Team Event.[3]
At DecipherCon 2000 the DecipherCon Team Challenge (#SW141, Sunday 8 October 2000, 10 a.m., four games, sanctioned) "follows the same format as Decipher's team events of the summer conventions with one major addition - wherever possible, no player will be paired against a player on their own team!" Teams had 3 or 4 players, and decklists were required.[4]
Decipher's DecipherCon 2002 formats page described a "Team Tournament" for The Lord of the Rings TCG and Star Trek CCG in the same terms: teams of three or four, never paired with a team member, top three results per team count.[6]
The Players Committee's Alternate Format Tournament Guide has a different team format: two-player teams, one playing Dark Side and one Light Side, with the match decided by the two games.[7]
