Talk:DecipherCon 2000
Tournament director cross-reference
Possibly faulty data
- Jeff Weitkamp is described in the source as "Tournament Director Jeff Weitkamp - Gold 40" of the Jabba's Palace Sealed Deck tournament only (Francis K. Lalumiere, 5 October 2000). His page says exactly that. The lead of this page says Justin Pakes directed the Star Wars rooms, so he was not the director of the whole convention.
- The Gold 40 slot matches the Squadron Members listing for Jeff Weitkamp, which is how the two were identified as the same person.

Style pass (2026-10-15)
Possibly faulty data
- Day 1 attendance: Wikipedia and Star Wars Insider 52 give 72 Day 1 players; Francis K. Lalumiere ("Mighty Jabba Sails Across the Atlantic", Decipher, 5 October 2000) put 170 competitors in the main hall fighting for a Day 2 seat. Article now states 72 and cites all three.
Marginal cuts
- Removed (uncited): "Decipher had announced its The Lord of the Rings Trading Card Game licence on 10 August 2000. A LOTR TCG poster hung behind Baksa's signing table in the official photographs." Caption also said "with a Lord of the Rings TCG poster behind the table".
- Removed: "Brian posted both photographs on 14 November 2020; the overlay on the celebration frame reads 'Team Albany / 2000 Star Wars CCG Team Champs.'" (source: Brian Terwilliger, X, 14 November 2020).
- Team photo caption order was given as "Left to right: Chris Terwilliger, Matt Sokol, Brian Terwilliger, Jonny Chu"; names are kept in that order.
- Photo gallery mechanics cut: Decipher's gallery was JavaScript (
/deciphercon/2000/photos/); thumbnail clicks opened pop-ups and crawlers mostly missed the full JPEGs; the eleven 400×300 originals were recovered fromdecipher.com/deciphercon/2000/photos/pictures/{id}.jpg. The Wayback Machine has no copy of thepictures/directory itself, and Save Page Now could not reach it on 26 October 2026 (error 523). - Card-toss anecdote source: Charles Hickey, "mr-hickey-goes-to-florida", Decktech (14 October 2000).
- Hallway caption detail cut: one still shows a player wearing a DecipherCon 2000 shirt; another Kevin Reitzel waving at the camera.
- Removed "Preserved copy" body bullets in the video sections; the copies remain in the refs and Sources.

Convention hub split (2026-10-17)
Build notes
- 2000 Decipher World Championship is now the subarticle for Day 1–3, the Final Confrontation, the FC video, and the championship-match interview. This page keeps venue, guests, seminars, side events, the Sunday team event, other games, trip-report operations, and photographs.
- Lead thumbs are hallway 5 (Doubletree lobby interior) and the guests-signing still. Worlds keeps the hall and champion plaque. No contemporaneous licensed facade of 3011 Maingate Lane was found (Commons, Flickr CC, historic postcard, Decipher gallery). The same building later operated as Holiday Inn Resort Kissimmee by the Parks (Travel Weekly; telephone still 407-396-1400). Seralago (5678 W Irlo Bronson) is a different hotel. DoubleTree Universal and DoubleTree SeaWorld are different hotels.
- Street address 3011 Maingate Lane also appears on a 8 October 2000 post from a guest at the same Doubletree (corfid.com/vbb/showthread.php?p=135872). Body cites Travel Weekly for the standing building.
- Hallway gallery cut to three group stills: Reitzel four-player (3), Colson (4), Colson in the lobby (5). Dropped hallway 1–2 (Reitzel close-ups) and File:Jim Colson DecipherCon 2000.jpg from this page. Dropped Young Jedi staff, STCCG plaque, Young Jedi uncut sheets, and Great Tribble Hunt banner (other-game-only; SWCCG-first).
Possibly faulty data
- Day 1 start: Sokol contemporaneous ~1 p.m., three hours after posted time (schedule 10 a.m.). Arendt waited three hours. Hayes PDS2 46:34–46:54: poorly run; first round paired at 1 p.m. when it was supposed to start at 8 or 9 a.m.; done at 2 a.m.; "five hours late." Body uses 1 p.m. (Sokol + Hayes pairings) and the 2 a.m. finish (Hayes).
- Tournament software: Bill recalled Matt Sokol PDS2 saying software broke and pairings were done by hand. Sokol auto-captions and a whisper of 38:00–46:00 do not have that claim. Paul Todd Feldman PDS2 40:28–40:37 (whisper-checked): "people said like the software was not working properly" / "I know it took forever." Body dests Feldman, not Sokol, and does not dest "by hand."
- Card flipping: Bill recalled Hayes PDS2 on people flipping cards. Hayes "as soon as he flips" at ~49:02 is a Star Trek Visage / Ray Bour / first-Gen-Con story, not 2000 Star Wars. Closest sourced 2000 claim is scouting (Hayes 50:43–51:12): players walked behind tables and shared what opponents played. That sentence is on the Worlds Recollections section.
- TFN preview (5 September 2000) said "over 75 tournaments." Decipher home/schedule: more than 60. Body follows Decipher.
Marginal cuts
- Final Confrontation Game 1/2 prose, FC video still/links, and Championship Match Interview moved to 2000 Decipher World Championship (already there at live 105555).
- Team Albany overnight ISB build stays on Worlds.
- YJ/ST/JK/LOTR seminar grid (Chuck Design-A-Card, Ellington/Martinson, Dean Irwin, LOTR reverse Q&A) left as other-game brief; SWCCG Q&A (Lischke) and card-production / Digital Deck kept.
- Loftus: ~dozen women in YJ Day 2; Roxanne Barbour only woman in ST Worlds; no woman in SW Worlds fifth year. Cut (other-game / one-line aside).

Lead photographs (2026-10-17)
Build notes
- Official Decipher site banner dested as File:DecipherCon 2000 banner.gif from http://decipher.com/images/deciphercon/2000/main/subhead.gif (Preserved copy: Wayback 20010828195329). Horizontal bar reading "deciphercon2000 orlando".
- Hallway 5 (lobby) and guests-signing moved off the lead into Photographs / Hallway (already listed there).
- Venue photograph dested as File:Doubletree Resort Kissimmee aerial.jpg, a USGS NAIP aerial of the two seven-story towers at 3011 Maingate Lane. OSM relation 8855505 (Park Inn By Radisson Resort & Conference Center Orlando) is this building. Census geocoder 28.33348, -81.58736 was the conference-center roof, about 350 m south of the hotel towers (28.3369, -81.5875).
Missing data
- No contemporaneous licensed street-level facade of the Doubletree. Decipher's 2000 site tree has no /location/ page analog to the 2002 confcenter.jpg. Commons, Flickr CC, and KartaView are empty at the towers. Hotel listing photographs are copyrighted.

Hotel and banner hunt (2026-10-17)
Missing data
- No destable street-level facade of 3011 Maingate Lane. Wikimedia Commons search "Cavalier Hotel Virginia Beach" returns 278 files (Tichnor Brothers postcards, Carol M. Highsmith 2019). The same search for this Kissimmee Doubletree / 3011 Maingate / Park Inn Radisson Kissimmee returns 0 photographs of the building. Decipher's 2000 site has no /location/ page analog to the 2002 confcenter.jpg. USGS NAIP aerial remains the destable venue photograph. Hallway 5 is the contemporaneous lobby interior.
- Extra banner hunt: File:DecipherCon 2000 banner.gif (site
subhead.gif, "deciphercon2000 orlando") is the only destable contemporaneous official banner. Vertical site chromedconside.jpgand "welcome to deciphercon"welcome.jpgwere not dested. SWCA's Decipher Con flyer is 2001. Team OK-UK shirts (Alan Rimmel; Tennet "DecipherCon 2k - Came to drink") have no destable photograph. Pre-event 2000 location/promo pages were never archived (earliest hub capture is 26 October 2000, after the con).

Radio Free Decipher Broadcasts 37, 50, 51 and 53 (2026-10-26)
Added a Radio Free Decipher section from the full Internet Archive copies of the Player's Council uploads (youtube-RvBxxX2Tmd4, UhZv7OpkOwA, 2tQmFqhsx74, Hff_CPT5OY0). All four decode end to end and match the archive.org lengths (18:33, 20:07, 27:35, 19:12). The section only uses lines that both the base.en and the medium.en machine transcripts agree on. The audio has stretches that neither model can read.
These hearings are not on the article and need a human listen:
- Broadcast 37: Decipher's listing dates it 2 June 2000. The upload title says 9 June 2000.
- Broadcast 51, about 8:28: Tom Lischke calls (as heard) Jabba's Palace Sealed Deck "really Mike Reynolds' project".
- Broadcast 51, about 13:40: after Lischke is asked who will win the Star Wars title, someone says Gary Carman "tore apart everybody over the course of the summer". I cannot tell who the speaker is.
- Broadcast 53, about 2:05–2:29: Tuttle thanks Warren Holland, and the celebrity guest he stayed close to sounds like "Shawn Borguet". It may be Michonne Bourriague; not confirmed.
- Broadcast 53, about 5:20: the winner of the late Saturday Warp Speed tournament for the 12 Star Trek finalists sounds like "Steven Levanis".
- Broadcast 53, about 5:50 and 6:33: the Digital Deck demonstration team sounds like Kyle Heuer, "Bill" and "Kate DeStefan".
- Broadcast 53, about 7:54–8:06: at the Friday volunteer Secret Squirrel event, the players heard are "Greg Keefer" and "Patrick Dinnell".
- Broadcast 53, about 8:56–10:20: Heuer describes the Star Wars final and the Albany players cheering in the main room. The scores are hard to hear, so the game details are left out.
