Shawn Valdez (player)
Shawn Valdez (died 31 August 1996) was a Jacksonville Star Wars CCG player commemorated on the Hoth card Shawn Valdez.[1][2]
Valdez left Jacksonville's first sanctioned tournament after two games and died the next day, 31 August 1996, at age 13.[1] Tournament director Greg Keefer (printed Gregg Keefer) held a Shawn Valdez tournament shortly afterward.[1]
In 1997 Keefer organized an informal weekend of benefit tournaments on the first anniversary of Valdez's death. The events raised $3,000 for the Child Cancer Fund.[1] Warren Holland asked Decipher's designers to create a Star Wars CCG character card. With Lucasfilm's permission the card Shawn Valdez shipped in Hoth Limited.[1]
The Duelist #28 (August 1998) reported a nationwide tournament weekend in late August dedicated to Valdez, with proceeds for a children's cancer fund in Jacksonville.[2] One published result from that weekend is the Bristol 1998 Shawn Valdez Tournament (29 August 1998).[3]
Star Wars CCG (Decipher): Unlimited (white border) editions of the sold-out A New Hope, Hoth, and Dagobah expansions should now be available. The Second Anthology will include eight unlimited Premiere, two Dagobah, and two Cloud City boosters as well as six "preview cards"—the Mon Calamari Cruiser, rebel leader Mon Mothma, and Flagship Operations for the light side, and Thunderflare, Rapid Deployment, and the Sarlaac for the dark side. The Special Edition expansion will draw on the new images and characters introduced in last year's re-release of the Star Wars trilogy. Look for it to be sold in both starters and boosters in September. Decipher will sponsor a nationwide tournament weekend in late August dedicated to SW:CCG fan Shawn Valdez, who died of cancer in 1996 at age 13. Proceeds will benefit a children's cancer fund in Valdez's hometown, Jacksonville, Florida (a card in the Hoth expansion commemorates Valdez). <CCGCustomerService@decipher.com>; <www.decipher.com>
