Expansion Shadows of the Empire (cancelled)
Publisher Decipher
Planned 1996–97; August 2000
Cards Total full expansion (1996–97); ~20 (2000)

Shadows of the Empire names two cancelled Decipher expansions: a 1996–97 full set listed in The Duelist, and a 2000 ~20-card mini-expansion (CardGuide #33).

1996–97 expansion

The Duelist #13 (October 1996) dated a Shadows of the Empire expansion to late December or January, after The Empire Strikes Back: Hoth.[1] Issue 14 (December 1996) said the expansion's future was uncertain. Some cards planned for Shadows would instead appear in a Special Edition expansion projected for June 1997.[2] Issue 15 (February 1997) reported that plans for a Shadows of the Empire expansion had been canceled.[3]

The cancelled expansion shares its name with Lucasfilm's 1996 multimedia project, whose story is Black Sun under Prince Xizor and swoop gangs on Tatooine. Special Edition printed Makurth. Its lore names bodyguards for Black Sun. Flare-S Racing Swoop is a 600 kph racing swoop. Swoop Mercenary lore names swoop gangs on Tatooine.

2000 mini-expansion

The later product was scheduled for August 2000 as a mini-expansion of about 20 cards based on the novel of the same name (CardGuide #33). The novel is set between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Decipher placed that story arc between Cloud City Limited and Jabba's Palace Limited.[4][5]

The Death Star II starter-deck rulebook advertised it as the next expansion, featuring Prince Xizor, Dash Rendar, their starships, and photo-realistic art.[6] Many of those card concepts shipped instead as unique premiums in Reflections II: Expanding the Galaxy (including Prince Xizor, Dash Rendar, Guri, Grand Admiral Thrawn, Outrider, Stinger, and Virago).[4]

No retail packaging was released.
