Holotable Text and Akzidenz-Grotesk, the faces it replaces.

Holotable Text is the free typeface family that sets the lore, game text, stat labels, type banners and copyright line of Players Committee virtual cards remastered by the swccg-cardmaker program.[1] It is a modified version of Barlow Condensed, released like it under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.[2][3] It replaced the commercial Akzidenz-Grotesk BQ Light, BQ and BQ Bold Condensed in swccg-cardmaker revision 64 on 3 November 2026.[4]

Background

Decipher and the Players Committee set lore and game text in Akzidenz-Grotesk condensed faces, a Berthold design (see Typography of Star Wars CCG cards). The Players Committee's Defensive Shields sheet embeds AkzidenzGroteskBE-Cn and -BoldCn.[5] Holotable Text keeps the sizes, line positions and line breaks those faces give on the cards, with letter shapes from a free font.[2]

How it was made

  • Base. Barlow Condensed, a free condensed grotesque designed by Jeremy Tribby.[2][6]
  • Weights. Each style starts from the Barlow Condensed weight whose strokes match the face it replaces once narrowed: Light from Light (lore), Regular from Medium (game text), Bold from SemiBold (labels).[2]
  • Proportions. Each weight was narrowed (to 80, 87 and 96 percent) and rescaled to the cap height the card templates assume. Capitals, lowercase, digits, punctuation and the word space were then adjusted as groups so real card text sets to the same widths. Single letters keep Barlow's own widths.[2]
  • Lines. Line metrics match the replaced faces, so text sits on the same baselines.[2]
  • Build. The fonts are built with fontTools. The Barlow sources and the build script are published beside the fonts and rebuild them byte for byte.[1]

How close it is

Game text on four cards: Players Committee, Akzidenz-Grotesk and Holotable Text.

On 24 reference cards rebuilt by swccg-cardmaker and compared with the Players Committee's images, lore, game text, banners, stat labels and the copyright line land in the same places as with Akzidenz-Grotesk, and lines break in the same places.[2]

Element Pixel difference with Akzidenz-Grotesk With Holotable Text
Copyright line 34.0 30.3
Stat labels 40.3 40.2
Type banners 16.0 16.0
Game text 45.5 45.8
Lore 20.0 21.4

Medians over the reference cards, on a 0–255 scale, against the Players Committee's 745-pixel card images.[2]

Where it falls short

  • Barlow is a squarer, DIN-like grotesque. Its curves and stroke ends are not Akzidenz-Grotesk's, and its g, y, parentheses and quotes differ visibly at large sizes.[2]
  • Its descenders are a little longer, so they come closer to the next line of game text.[2]
  • Lore matches the Players Committee's images a little less closely than with Akzidenz-Grotesk (21.4 against 20.0).[2]
