Dark Side C2 A New Hope

Ghhhk and its lightside counterpart, Houjix, open up a whole new type of deck construction with the release of A New Hope. In the Premiere set, 'getting wide' to augment force drains was a dangerous proposition. Having only one or two characters or starships at each location invited an overwhelming counterattack, with a huge amount of battle damage typically resulting. Even if the player being attacked had an interrupt to cancel the battle, there was always the danger that the attacker had a Sense to cancel the Hyper Escape or Narrow Escape. Ghhhk now allows the loser of the battle to eliminate all battle damage. It is immune to Sense, so the worst thing the LS player can do is hit it with What Are You Tryin To Push On Us or Grappling Hook. With eight to ten Ghhhks in a deck, the DS player can include many locations and cheap characters/starships to get a good force drain established before the LS can respond. When Obi, Luke, and Han (along with the Jedi Presence and Destiny Adders) show up to attack that Stormtrooper draining in the Cantina with a Presence of the Force for 3 a turn, the DS can forfeit the Stormtrooper and play Ghhhk to eliminate the battle damage. For spice, she can play a Lone Warrior to force the LS to lose Han. The next turn, the DS can continue draining at the other 4 Tatooine sites in play. If the LS player spreads thin to try to stop the drain, DS may respond by playing that Vader or Kitik Keed'kak they have been holding. This strategy works extremely well in space also. The key is having enough locations and cheap deploys in the deck to maintain the force drain throughout the game. And most importantly, always have a Ghhhk in hand.

Cards to watch out for: Grimtaash. The DS should stop drawing when there are two or three Ghhhks in hand, or run the risk of having the deck crippled by this card. Grappling Hook. If one of the Ghhhks gets grappled, the DS should make sure adequate forfeit is maintained at all sites to avoid a debilitating battle loss.

Combos:

Ghhhk + Stormtroopers (TIEs) (Jawas) + Lone Warrior (Lone Pilot) (Moment Of Triumph). One of the keys to the force drain deck is maintaining more characters or ships on the table. It helps to add some attrition to knock off a few of the LS characters or ships.

Ghhhk + WED 15-17 'Septoid droid'. Adding a few of these attrition soaks can help protect some of the stronger characters in the deck. If the attack continues next turn, maybe Ghhhk will become necessary. These work well at sites where the DS has established 4 ability, and thus, a destiny draw.

Ghhhk + Presence Of The Force + Organa's Ceremonial Necklace. These cards help the force drain. They fit better in a Ghhhk deck than a lightsaber because the 'saber has to be protected. The point of playing with Ghhhk is that the DS player does not mind losing any given character or ship.

Ghhhk + Imperial Holotable + Monnok + Ng'ok. Just another site to force drain at. Just one Ghhhk can keep the LS player from draining there every turn as the DS can deploy on her turn, and withdraw during the LS deploy phase.

Ghhhk + Mosep. Mosep should be one of the prime force drain members, as the loss will come straight from the LS reserve deck.

Ghhhk + Sunsdown + Defel. Defel under night time conditions fits the theme of this deck perfectly, as he can avoid combat, thus saving the use of the Ghhhk, and still be there for the counter attack.

These cards are extremely versatile and can almost always help add to your force drain or lessen your opponents.

Here's how.

If you're getting Force drained for 3 or more (the more the better) at any site, deploy a talz/stormtrooper/x-wing/tie or other similar low deploy card. You will then block the force drain on your opponents turn. He/she will then have to spend a Force to initiate (mabye more if he targets weapons, etc.). You merely lose the one card and the Houjix/Ghhhk. Thus, if he/she was going to Force drain for five you would instead lose only the Houjix and character.

Another great use for these cards is the following. Pick a remote spot (a site with no adjacent areas) where you can Force drain for one or, if possible, two. If you have a spy, look for a 2/0 Force site (war room). Deploy a character there. Your opponent will be forced to deploy characters to block the Force drain and then battle you. When he/she does, lose your two cards. He/she has used up a good deal of Force killing your character and has now stranded (barring a Nabrun/Elis) one or more characters on this remote site. If it is a 2/0 site then he/she can't force drain either.

These cards are also a must if you use undercover spies. If your opponent Alters your Undercover effect, you will most likely be caught with just one card defending against a rather large group. Without the Houjix/Ghhk cards you could lose a good deal of Force.

Combos

  • Ghhhk + Imperial Holotable + Mosep Mosep should be one of the prime force drain members, as the loss will come straight from the Light Side Reserve Deck.[2]
  • Ghhhk + Sunsdown + Defel Defel under 'night time conditions' fits the theme of this deck perfectly, as he can avoid combat, thus saving the use of the Ghhhk, and still be there for the counter attack.

Rulings

  • Cards that cannot be forfeited (such as a character not participating in battle, or a Floating Refinery) do not prevent a player from canceling all remaining battle damage.[2]
