Note: Community history is messy. This page prefers dated primary or archived sources and labels secondary/uncertain claims. It does not invent backstory. For rules-by-era see Rulebooks; for constructed pools see Formats; for virtual packaging eras see Virtual Sets (2002-2009) vs Virtual Blocks vs Current Virtual.

The History of the Players Committee traces how volunteer Players Committee (PC) support replaced Decipher's commercial end-of-life for Star Wars CCG, created Virtual cards, reorganized them, and later Reset the tournament pool.

This wiki is a fan encyclopedia. It is not the Players Committee and does not replace starwarsccg.org.

Timeline (high level)

Decipher era and handoff

Decipher published Star Wars CCG from 1995 through Theed Palace (2001) and related products. When Decipher announced the license was leaving, it publicly formed a Players' Committee / Player Advocate structure so fans could continue organized play, rulings, and support.[1]

That announcement names early Advocate roles (player support, tournament support, rules support, gameplay support), describes a Norfolk meeting to turn the game over to players, and notes Game Players Network assistance with communications and prize shipping after 30 April 2002. It also teases a forthcoming virtual-card pool and timetable.[1]

Contemporary fan indexes (GPN) tracked PC news in spring 2002, including a 29 April 2002 headline that Decipher would donate over one million dollars in product, promotional materials, and financial backing to the Players Committee.[2]

Virtual program begins (2002)

The PC's first Virtual Card Set was announced to the community on 12 February 2002 (TFN citing GPN), with a targeted release of 4 March 2002 and Virtual Set #2 targeted for 6 May 2002. Preview week was listed as 25 February–1 March 2002; distribution was via PDF on decipher.com.[3]

Decipher's "Virtual Card Set #1 is Away!" page (dated 5 March 2002) describes twelve Premiere-based (V) slips and states the cards would be tournament-legal Saturday, 9 March 2002.[4]

Early printable framing is preserved in VirtualCards1.pdf. That modifier / sleeve presentation is very different from later Block-era and current Virtual packaging — see Virtual Sets (2002-2009).

From 2002 into 2009 the PC continued releasing numbered Virtual Sets (and a Premium Defensive Shields set in secondary chronologies). See the set index on Virtual Sets (2002-2009) for what is sourced versus still unmarked.

Reorg / "Blocks" (about September 2009)

The Players Committee later regrouped Legacy Virtual material into Virtual Blocks (2009–2014). The official slips library still labels Legacy Virtual Sets (2002-2009) separately from Legacy Virtual Blocks (2009–2014).[5]

On this wiki, Block hubs are Virtual Block 1Virtual Block 9 and Virtual Shields. Do not treat Blocks as a lossless rename of VS1–18: presentation, organization, errata, and the legal card pool could change, and Virtual cards could be dropped relatively easily compared with reprinting physical product. Exact drop lists and modifier diffs need cited sources page-by-page (planned later).

Terms such as community "Redux" / "Revolution" appear in period set naming (for example secondary lists call Virtual Set 3 "Revolution") but this page does not equate marketing nicknames with the 2009 Block reorg unless a primary source says so.

Advanced Rulebook 2.0 (Legacy Virtual rules)

During the Legacy Virtual period the PC published Players Committee Advanced Rulebook 2.0 (archived final PDF; wiki transcription labeled Legacy Virtual-era). Among other revisions it introduced the Mission card type. That book is not the current tournament Advanced Rulebook.

2014 Virtual Card Reset

In Fall 2014 the PC Reset the competitive virtual pool. On this wiki, Virtual Set 0 and Virtual Set D are dated 24 September 2014 on the Main Page Current Virtual band. The Alternate Format Tournament Guide describes Standard (post-Reset virtual icons) versus Legacy (pre-Reset black-diamond / Block pool), and notes the 2014 World Championships as the last championship circuit on the old pool.[6]

After the Reset, Current Virtual sets continue (see Category:Current Virtual sets). Current tournament rules are transcribed at Players Committee Advanced Rulebook (2023 edition).

Current site

Organized play, slips, formats, and news remain at starwarsccg.org. This wiki cross-links those resources but does not replace them.

Versioned layers (read this before collapsing history)

Layer Rough span Where on this wiki Rules / formats pointers
Decipher print + Decipher rules 1995–2001 (+ Decipher errata/CRD era) Decipher set hubs; Rulebooks band 1 Star Wars Customizable Card Game RULEBOOK 2.0, Decipher Glossary 2.0, Decipher Glossary Supplement
Pre-reorg Virtual Sets (PDF sleeve modifiers) 2002-2009 Virtual Sets (2002-2009) Early slips e.g. VirtualCards1.pdf; later Legacy rules in Players Committee Advanced Rulebook 2.0
Virtual Blocks / Shields (Legacy packaging) ~2009–2014 Category:Virtual Legacy sets Still pre-Reset pool relative to Standard; Legacy format
Current Virtual (post-Reset) 2014– Category:Current Virtual sets Players Committee Advanced Rulebook (2023); Standard format

Errata and drops: Virtual text is easier to revise or remove from legality than a physical print run. A card's (V) text in 2002, its Block-era presentation, and any current Virtual descendant may disagree. Prefer the document and format that match the era you are playing; do not assume "whatever is on the current cardlist" is the historical text.

Gaps and uncertainties

  • Exact legal dates for most of VS3–VS18 and Premium Set 1 are not yet cited from primary announces on this wiki.
  • Whether every secondary subtitle (star-wars.pl) matches PC marketing names needs confirmation against slip covers/announces.
  • VS18 appears on a secondary list but is not named in the PC slips "Sets 1–17" heading cited above.
  • Community nicknames (Redux, Revolution, etc.) are only partially pinned to primary PC terminology here.
  • Full inventories of cards dropped between pre-reorg, Block, and Reset pools are out of scope until sourced.
