Operatives

Operatives are a cycle of unrestricted Alien characters in Special Edition. Each title is tied to one planet. While at a matching site, an Operative adds 1 to Force drains there. It gains power or forfeit, and may deploy one site to that planet from Reserve Deck once during each of your deploy phases.[1][2]
Imperial Occupation / Imperial Control (Dark) and Local Uprising / Liberation (Light) flip and pay off around matching Operatives on a Renegade planet.[3]
1998 World Championship[edit]
Special Edition was legal at the 1998 Decipher World Championship before the public street date. Each of the 56 finalists received a complete set to build from.[4] Trandosite later called the weekend the Operative Worlds. Matching Operatives defined Saturday. Evan Ferguson finished 14th, the highest finisher who did not play them.[5]
Matt Potter won with 20 Eriadu Operative under Imperial Occupation (day-one Dark) and 20 Alderaan Operative under Local Uprising. Michael Riboulet won game 1 of the final by 19 with Dark Operatives; Potter won game 2 by 28, also on Operatives.[5]
Chuck Kallenbach wrote that Operatives were added late with little playtesting, and that Japanese testers asked for more copies before Virginia Beach. Players traded through the night for matching copies. Radio Free Decipher Broadcast 2 (11 December 1998) discussed a provisional ruling to errata rather than ban them after they became a negative play experience.[6][7]
After the event Decipher issued errata that hit Spaceport Speeders, then Operatives, Floating Refinery, and Hidden Base.[5] Trandosite wrote that 1998 created more errata than Decipher had given out before.[5]
