Introduction

If played well, I believe that classic-legal decks can do well in open format tournaments. Here's my first stab.

<Strategy>

I built this deck with the idea of reactivity in mind, very similar to Throne Room Mains, but with the ability to do the typical QMC drain and evade, as explained in the rough outline below.

<Early Game>

Every game I start with (V) Beldon’s Eye and KTEOF, but I leave the third effect flexible, as is explained above. I pull Bespin: CC first turn and scan my deck to see if Mirax and the Skate are there. If they are, I deploy them to CC, safe from capital starships. If I have Lando or Lobot in hand I may deploy for the first turn flip, but only if I’m able to back them up. I basically want to get the locations out and flip, which paves the way for the mid-game.

<Mid-game>

Mid game is all about locking down Bespin and getting CC Celebration up and running. Concentrate on getting Bright Hope/Spiral out and deploy Home One as well. How I back up these really depends on the strength of the space I’m going against. I may put Corran and Wedge on the capital ships to cancel an additional battle destiny if I’m having trouble. At this point I will want to get some presence on CC, so I’ll spread out my forces, in most cases characters like Obi-Wan or Yoda who do a good job holding sites on their own. I also want to have the (V) WV out by this point so I can use Lefty to save my guys from beatdowns. I have the scrubs like Karrde, Chewbacca, etc. for use in surgical beatdowns when I get a chance.

<Late game>

Activation will be strong, retrieval will be steady, and drains will be large. When QMC gets to the late game, you’re pretty much guaranteed a win.

<Card Choices>

I think a significant number of my cards are either new or unorthodox, so I’ll do some explaining.

Revolution- against Huntdown and BHBM, I will use this card to revolve a key activation location, usually the Meditation Chamber or the Blockade Flagship: Bridge.

(V) Wyron Serper- I really don’t want to lose to Huntdown, so this guy drops on the Holotheatre to cancel Visage. I can also use him against Walkers as a backup for Corran, but his low defense value could be a liability.

(V) Wookiee Strangle- Goodbye Palpatine! I rest my case.

(V) Keep Your Eyes Open- Great for deck circulation; an easily trackable five.

Smoke Screen- this card lets you get a battle destiny without drawing, well worth it for a Yoda beatdown when you’re playing against the destiny-eating Senate. Also useful if my amateur tracking skills fail me.

Captive Pursuit- Cancels (V) Special Delivery.

(V) Heroic Sacrifice- good against maitenance characters; I may swap it out for (V) Toryn Farr, but will have to test more to decide.

(V) Civil Disorder- this card can retrieve all of my non-EPP characters, of which there are 17.

Glancing Blow- anti-dueling/Vader tech.

CC: Casino- Who knows? Maybe I’ll get them to pull the anti-sabaac shield! An exterior site I can cover with the West Gallery and Lando w/ Blaster or (V) Han w/ (V) Blaster

<Matchups>

I have to admit that I have never played some of these matchups, but would like to think I’m prepared for them.

<Encountered Matchups>

I’ve played against these decks before and know how they work.

ISB- lock down the Bespin system, cancel drains with Menace Fades. Flip and they can’t cancel my drains on CC where I have an alien. Beat down their low power agents when possible.

Walkers- it may be impossible to stop them from blowing the generators, but take the chance if you get it. Use Mech. Failure to cut their AT-AT’s power and then use Corran/Wyron to establish presence and follow up with a beatdown crew. There’s nothing you can do about Trample or Ghhk, though. Take control of the Hoth system and retrieve like heck with (V) Flash, CC Celebration. If they have a non-Hoth location down for activation, revolve it.

Huntdown- Get out revolution, space control should be easy. Bright Hope + Spiral in space should be plenty if you move the Skate to the system. Wyron goes to the holotheatre to cancel Visage, if necessary, or you can let Visage work for you and deal damage to both if you can keep the opponent unflipped.

MKOS- Establish Menace Fades and you’re set. CC Celebration retrieval will take care of what you’re losing from their drains. Try to get a (V) Civil Disorder character retrieval loop going. Leia, Rebel Princess will be tech.

Court- If they capture your characters use Captive Pursuit to release them. Menace Fades and Leia, Rebel Princess will again be tech. Watch out for their BHer ships pullable by the objecive. If I’m having a bit of trouble in space I may let them capture one or two of my characters so they can’t download the ships.

Deal- If they are playing (V) WV, start (V) Civil Disorder and just battle the heck out of them. You’ll be converting a lot of their locations so they will be short on force. Space will be a problem if I can’t get the destiny cancellers out, so I need to concentrate on ground.

<Speculative Matchups>

I haven’t encountered these decks before, but I’ve done research on how to play against them.

BHBM- BHBM lets you pull Luke (how convenient!) so download (V) SOS who in turn downloads (V) Yoda (check out the ‘training destiny’ in his gametext). If you’re lucky you can trap Vader on CC with captive Luke with no way to get him to the Throne Room. If they have Palpy alone at the TR use Wyron/Corran to set up a beatdown or simply get rid of him (do I hear (V) Wookiee Strangle?) I can use Glancing Blow + Obi-wan w/ Saber to get rid of Vader fast in battle. Use the anti-maintenance for their Uber Fett and basically don’t let yourself be in a position to lose battles. Lefty will be helpful.

Senate- The key here is hit fast and low. Force drain early, get (V) Civil Disorder out to add to their senators’ deploy costs. Place OOP Lott Dod with (V) Leia. Cancel their political effects with (V)ST. Use Smoke Screen to get high destiny. Use Wedge + Corran + Bright Hope + Home One/Spiral in space to counter their Zuckuss + Baron combo. Senate is card intensive, so just make them lose force.

LSC- Start (V) Civil Disorder to cancel their combat cards when needed. Use non-jedi like Luke w/ Saber to kill their jedi; (V) SOS + Yoda will also be effective, but don’t let them combat Yoda. Just remember to set up normally on CC and things should go fine.

CCT- Cancel (V) Spec Delivery with Captive Pursuit and focus on releasing Han and killing Lando. Space should be a cinch, so retrieve with CC Celebration.

<Closing>

Those are the major matchups that I would expect to face. I would appreciate constructive advice on ways to maximize my card efficiency and strategy tips for decks I didn’t mention (like SYCFA and Watto). Ways to maximise the strength of my space would be appreciated as well. I would also like to try to find room for (V) Ineffective Manuever so I can get in a few shields. Just to let you know, I’m not going to change it from classic-legal, so be advised that any recommendations to that end will hit a brick wall. ;)

Thanks for reading and hopefully reviewing.

God bless and MTFBWY.

<EDIT>

Thanks for the review, icebreath; I caught the Wokling thing this morning and changed it. Oops. ;) Obviously I'll need to work things out, mostly in the area of handling power. I think I'll try to squeeze in a (V)FOTE so I can take out mains with some of my scrubs without the dueling risk. Thanks for an honest and constructive review. :)
