2001 Decipher World Championship
2001 Decipher World Championship was the sixth and last Decipher-era Star Wars CCG World Championship. Decipher had scheduled DecipherCon 2001 for 15–18 November at the Sheraton Oceanfront Hotel in Virginia Beach, with a $50,000 cash purse across its games.[1][2]
On 3 October 2001 Warren Holland cancelled the convention, citing September 11 airline-safety concerns. Decipher donated the $50,000 championship purse to September 11 relief.[3][4] Players ran a replacement, FreedomCon, in Virginia Beach under the same qualification rules. Bastian Winkelhaus (Germany) defeated Martin Akesson (Sweden).[5][6]
A February 2002 press release on Game Players Network, copied to TheForce.Net, named Winkelhaus as the previous year's FreedomCon champion (returning Day 2 bye for 2002, with Matt Sokol).[7]
The constructed pool was Premiere - Reflections III. Full published 2001 constructed lists remain sparse; this hub records the champion, runner-up, site, format, and the cancellation.
Decipher's Star Wars, Young Jedi, and Jedi Knights licenses ended 31 December 2001. Tournament support moved to the volunteer Players Committee.[8]
