Echo Base Operations is a Light Effect from Hoth.

Card Text

Deploy on Main Power Generators if you occupy at least three Echo sites. At every system location, you deploy is -1, your Force drains are +2 and your total power is +3 in battles. Effect canceled if opponent occupies five Hoth sites. (Immune to Alter.).

Lore

Following the Battle of Yavin, the Alliance garnered the support of systems ready to oppose the Empire. Echo Base provides a command center for focusing that support.

Well, this card needs little introduction. I remember when I got my first Box of the Hoth expansion and got a look at this card. I thought, "Wow, I wonder if I could make this work...."

Well, I read into it and decided that it would simply be too hard to make happen and frankly kind of susceptible to more "specialized" decks. Boy, was I wrong!

A few months later the Echo Base Operations (EBO) deck burst onto the scene. It was fast, it was tough, and it was nearly unstoppable! To be honest, I believe this card to be the second most powerful non-character card in the game (second only to the quite effective, and dreaded, Scanning Crew).

Here's how it works. To most effectively use EBO you've got to get the necessary sites on the table. This can be made easier if you have two of each of these needed sites. Also, have plenty of System Location through which to drain from.

The main idea isn't to battle - don't let that "+3 in battle" fool you.

The most efficient EBO decks I've seen have only Y-wings (which deploy for nothing with EBO in place) and protective interrupts like Hyper Escape or Houjix. Once the Dark Side commits to an action with EBO going, you'll be able to drain your dark opponent out of the game before he can mount another such action.

  • Echo Base Command Center + Droid + How Did We Get Into This Mess = You can go through your deck and get everything you need in only a couple of turns. This makes an otherwise slow EBO deck, insanely fast!
  • EBO + Kessel + 3 Y-wings + Y-wing Assault Squadron = With EBO running you can deploy the Y-wings for nothing at Kessel and replace them with the Squadron. Your drains are now 5 at Kessel! Few cards can get you that kind of game-impacting potential!

9.5 (I would have given it a 10 except for the fact that by and large EBO decks are suceptible to Monnock.)
