1998 Decipher World Championship
1998 Decipher World Championship was the third Star Wars CCG World Championship. Decipher's packet is dated 20 November 1998 over Kendrick Summers' letterhead. Play was Saturday 21 and Sunday 22 November at the Cavalier Hotel, Virginia Beach, Virginia.[1] Trandosite later called the site Norfolk; the packet is the Decipher document and names the Cavalier.[2]
Matt Potter (United States) defeated Michael Riboulet (United Kingdom) 2 (+9). Riboulet won game 1 by 19 with Dark Operatives; Potter won game 2 by 28, also on Operatives. Potter was the first American World Champion. Riboulet became the first player in two Grand Finals.[2]
The constructed pool was Premiere - Special Edition, timed with that expansion. Operatives defined the weekend. Tomoya Suzuki led day 1, with Lucas Hernandez just behind. Evan Fergusson finished 14th of 55, the highest finisher Trandosite names who did not play Operatives. Jacobs just missed the twelve; Riboulet made it.[2]
Lucas Hernandez dominated day 2 until Riboulet beat him by a large margin in the last game and took the final slot. After the event Decipher errata hit Spaceport Speeders (Jon Van Der Meer's timeout Light), then Operatives, Floating Refineries, and Hidden Base.[2]
